Juke Joint Johnny & Silky Sam

The 2008-09 Gage Hall Coffeehouse series will next present  an exciting evening of acoustic music by  Juke Joint Johnny November 15th at 8 pm in Gage Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church

When you hear the term "force of nature" you probably think of hurricanes, tornados or perhaps tsunamis, but you probably would never associate the term with the name, John Winkler. Well, perhaps if you instead heard John's stage name,"Juke Joint Johnny" the allusion might make sense.

One of the top harp players in this part of the country, "The Harmonica Beast of the Southeast", Juke joint Johnny plays an exuberant stripped-down blues 'n' boogie that always thrills his audience. When John takes the stage to perform the blues and jazz standards for which he is famous, the level of energy is palpable and the house lights up like--well--a juke box!

Join harmonica virtuoso "Juke Joint Johnny" and Friends at Gage Hall Coffeehouse on Saturday November 15 at for a benefit concert to support science enrichment programs at Mitchell Elementary School. Gage Hall, 4 Archdale St.; Enjoy a  variety of gourmet coffees, donated by Earthfare, teas, sodas and home baked desserts. Admission: $10 adults; $5 students. Call 224-4472 for more information.

What We Do With the Money! Print

The Social Justice Committee at the Unitarian Church in Charleston has stepped in, raising money to help level the academic playing field. This year, they are sponsoring weekly enrichment programs at Charleston Progressive, James Simons, Mitchell and Fraser elementary schools. Hurst recalls an experience that illustrates the need for such enrichment programs. Painting time was over, but a young girl begged to continue meticulously applying color to her musical gourd. Perhaps she could paint at home, a supervisor suggested. The girl replied that she did not have paint at home. Another supervisor pointed out what an artist she was. The 8-year-old's face lit up as she replied, "Thank you for noticing."
