Join the staff of the Unitarian Church in Charleston (UC-CHS), an inclusive community of inspiration, love and service committed to creating a better world. The applicant need not be a Unitarian Universalist to apply but must be comfortable in a diverse environment working with LGBTQ+ people, Jewish people, agnostics, atheists, pagans, Christians, Buddhists, and more.

The Membership Coordinator guides people along the pathway from visitor to new member, new member to established member, and established member to church leader. Church members are each on their own spiritual journey. As part of our community they are supported in their search for truth and meaning, their development of a Unitarian Universalist (UU) theology and identity, and their expression of our UU values in the world.

While some tasks may be completed remotely, in person work will be required at least two days a week - including but not limited to Wednesdays (10am-3pm) and Sundays (9am-1pm). Remainder of the hours can be completed at home on the computer and/or in-person.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Sunday Mornings:

  • Serve as a point of connection and resource to visitors and newcomers to UC-CHS.

  • Work with the Membership Team to welcome and introduce visitors and new members to Unitarian Universalism and the congregation;

  • Recruit, train, and manage Membership Team, Sunday Greeters and Hospitality Team members

Membership Pathways:

  • Develop and maintain a pathway to membership at UC-CHS;

  • This may include New to UU Classes, Membership Classes, Membership Dinners and other social events, and New Member Sunday Services

  • Nurture and support members deepening relationships with UC-CHS.

  • Working with the Minister and Vestry Board, develop and maintain a leadership development pathway to bring people from new members to engaged members and then to church leaders.

  • Develop and maintain systems for encouraging and tracking Membership and Leadership.

Community Support:

  • Coordinate and oversee community events such as community dinners, holiday parties, and other events.

  • Facilitate communication between and among members and ministry areas, enabling people to find opportunities for connection, growth, and service.

Administrative:

  • Regularly submit Gateway articles and Social Media posts pertinent to Membership

  • Maintain communications with church membership.

  • Regularly update the database with attendance records from events.

  • Regularly update the database with membership status and visitor and member contact records.

  • Maintain the records for members receiving UU World magazine.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and supervision meetings with the minister.

Experience

  • Experience in volunteer engagement

  • Passion for working with people

  • Self-starter, ability to work independently and meet deadlines

  • Experience in a work environment requiring a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism

  • Proficient in the use of Breeze or equivalent church management software or other people database system

  • Writing and editing experience, with an attention to detail

  • Proficient in Windows, Google Workspace (G-suite), YouTube, Zoom, MailChimp, Squarespace, Facebook, Instagram, Canva, and Survey Monkey

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week
